COVID-19 TESTING

Neergaard Pharmacy recommends COVID-19 testing to be performed in accordance with guidelines from New York State, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the manufacturers of the testing kits. We strongly recommend that you schedule testing based on the timing of the development of symptoms associated with COVID-19. According to the CDC, and based on preliminary data, the median incubation period and time to symptom onset is approximately 5 days from exposure, but may range anywhere from 2-14 days.

Who Qualifies?

Anyone age 4 years or older can get tested. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, parent or legal guardian.

How It Works?

1. Go to www.Neergaardpharmacies.com.

2. Select an available date and time in our scheduling program Home Page.

3. Fill out the registration form.

4. Proof of identity is required upon arrival to Neergaard Pharmacy for your test.

5. Be sure to provide an active mobile phone number in order for us to call you with your test results.

What Type of Tests are performed?

Neergaard Pharmacy offers four different types of COVID-19 tests. Each test serves a unique role in the detection and treatment of COVID-19 infection. We currently perform the following tests:

COMBINATION RAPID COVID-19 Antigen test and RAPID Influenza A+B Antigen test - results available in 15 minutes

ON-SITE RT Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test - results available in 1 hour

►Standard RT Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test which is analyzed by an outside, independent laboratory - results available in 1-3 days

►Rapid Point of Care Molecular PCR-based test - results available in 15 minutes

►Rapid Antigen COVID-19 test - results available in 15 minutes

A sample is collected via a nasal swab by a Pharmacist.

If you are getting your test for a specific purpose such as travel, please ensure you are selecting the proper test required by your airline, destination or other requiring organization. Certain travel destinations and airlines do not accept rapid antigen result testing.

COMBINATION RAPID COVID-19 ANTIGEN TEST AND RAPID INFLUENZA A+B ANTIGEN TEST

This winter season, as we face the constantly evolving changes of COVID-19, it is likely that the influenza virus and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be circulating at the same time. There is a great deal of overlap in the symptoms of both a COVID-19 infection and an influenza infection. Both viral illnesses may present with fever, chills, headache, cough, sore throat, body aches, muscle aches, tiredness and respiratory symptoms.

The combination rapid COVID-10 antigen test AND rapid Influenza A+B Antigen test reliably provides rapid results for both COVID-19 and Influenza A+B infection making the diagnosis and treatment of either infection accurate and quick. Results are available in 15 minutes.

ON SITE RT- PCR TEST

This test is a fully-integrated, automated RT-PCR diagnostic test intended for the qualitative detection of SARS-COV-2 nucleic acid in nasal swab samples. This test is performed on-site at Neergaard Pharmacy and provides results in 1 hour. This test is ideal for travel or medical procedures.

PCR (POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION) COVID-19 TEST

STANDARD PCR TEST

This is a test to detect an active COVID-19 infection. A sample nasal swab is collected at Neergaard Pharmacy by a licensed pharmacist and sent to an outside, independent laboratory for analysis. Patients can expect results in 2 to 3 days.  The virus is detectable within 5-10 days of illness/symptom onset.

RAPID POINT OF CARE MOLECULAR PCR-BASED COVID-19 TEST

Rapid Molecular PCR-based test results are available in 15 minutes. This is a diagnostic test that utilizes an isothermal Nucleic Acid Amplification Technology (NAAT) to detect nucleic acid from viral RNA. This test is also known as a Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Test. The Rapid Molecular PCR-based test can detect very small amounts of viral RNA very early in an infection, including pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.  Molecular tests detect the genetic material (RNA) of the coronavirus and are sensitive enough to need only a very small amount of viral RNA to be accurate in the detection of active infection. Rapid Molecular PCR-based tests have a low chance of producing false negatives.

RAPID ANTIGEN COVID-19 TEST

Rapid COVID-19 Antigen tests results are available in 15 minutes. The test directly detects the presence or absence of coronavirus protein or antigen in your body.  The virus must have produced sufficient protein or shed large enough amounts to be detected. This test is useful in detecting the virus when someone is at or near peak infection when there is sufficient protein shedding present. A rapid COVID-19 Antigen test is performed using a nasal swab. If you are getting your testing for a specific purpose such as travel, please ensure you are selecting the proper test required by your airline, destination or other requiring organization. Certain travel destinations and airlines do not accept rapid result testing.

RAPID IgG/IgM COVID-19 ANTIBODY TEST

This is a rapid serology test that detects IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the blood. IgM and IgG antibodies in the blood indicate if a person has been exposed to and developed antibodies against the virus. If you have been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19, your body typically produces antibodies as part of the immune response to the virus. It can take at least two weeks after exposure to develop antibodies. This blood test analyzes a small blood sample, from a fingerstick, similar to when a diabetic patient checks their blood sugar.  Your test results may help identify if you were exposed to the virus and, if so, whether or not your body has developed antibodies. Although having antibodies usually gives immunity from further infection there is not enough evidence at this time to suggest that people who have antibodies are protected against future infections from the virus. Results from this test also will not provide information on whether you can spread the virus to others and is not used as a basis for diagnosis. Because the test checks for antibodies, it may also confirm that your body produced antibodies in response to vaccine administration. It is important to remember that COVID-19 antibody testing should not be used to determine or validate the effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine. Patients who test positive for antibodies should continue to be vigilant about following CDC guidelines to prevent COVID-19 infection including social distancing, wearing face masks/face coverings in public, and all patients regardless of immune status should receive the COVID-19 vaccine when it is available to them.

Precautions To Take After You Receive Your Test Results

COVID-19 PCR Test

Negative - Continue to exercise universal precautions such as social distancing, quarantining, frequent hand washing, wearing of a mask or face cloth in public, and other CDC guideline recommendations.

Positive - You have tested positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. You are likely actively contagious and should home quarantine (sleep alone in bed, if possible use your own bathroom, wipe down surfaces, and wear a mask when in the same room as others). Please note, a small percentage of patients with active infection may be completely asymptomatic. It is recommended based on the CDC's most up to date return to work recommendation of the rule of 10/3. If you do not have symptoms at the time of your PCR nasal swab, you may return to work in 10 days (provided you do not have a fever 3 days prior to your return to work). If you are symptomatic and test positive, you are still likely contagious to others.

A positive PCR test does not yield any information about potential immunity. Please be re-evaluated immediately for worsening symptoms such as shortness of breath or lightheadedness.

You are recommended to self-quarantine for 10 days from onset of symptoms. After 10 days, you may return to work provided your respiratory symptoms (i.e. cough, runny nose, etc.) are improving AND you are fever-free for 24 hours (without using fever reducing medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen).
